Here is a beautiful Japanese Art Deco box. It's most likely a cigarette or cigar box due to the cedar wood lining, which is typical for those types of boxes of that period. It appears to be silver plated, and other antique dealers have attributed these boxes to Sally Shell as the designer. It has a "Made in Japan" stamp on the bottom, which dates it anywhere from 1921-1941.
The Art Deco period influenced design around the world, but it's fairly rare to see Asian items with this sort of design. The deer or gazelle motif on the lid of the box is an iconic symbol of that period.
Thanks for posting this great box. I wasn't aware that the Japanese were used to make Art Deco pieces.
