Just got this, think its a 8mm French Lebel 1886D type bullet. Not sure about the crown or the notch in the bullet. Cool trench art. Any info you can give, is appreciated.

The shell casing is 8mm Lebel, but the bullet is not the Balle-D round. I am guessing a piece of steel, turned on a lathe. No idea what the slot is about. Perhaps Scott can enlighten us. The crown is the front of a German WWI button.
Chrisnp, Thanks for the help! I was thinking you could put a card in the notch, maybe table place settings or a calling/business card...
Not an expert but I read that soldiers in V.Nam were using the muzzle flash suppressors on the M-16's to open c-rats or amo crates. Perhaps the soldier that made this might have been using it for similar purposes. Hence the crown on the side in order to not confuse it with other rounds. Just a thought.
Thanks kanukster, it would work very well as a spam can opener! I didn't even think about it.
