This is a 1869 patent, (probably made in the 1880's) portfolio trunk. These trunks were patented by TB Peddie, and I believe his company made them as well. All of the patent portfolio trunks, even the one posted by jscott, have the same unique handles. The same handles that are shown on the cover, and inside, of my 1909 Peddie catalog, and ones I have yet to see anywhere else. The primary feature of the patent of the portfolio trunk is a removable portfolio, or envelope. On the other portfolio trunks I have seen the portfolio is held in place with 2 cloth stays. On mine there are four metal pieces that can be rotated to remove the portfolio. This trunk has alligator over sole leather, and is in fantastic original condition. The interior is complete and shows little signs of wear. All of the hardware on this trunk is brass, and all of the nails and rivets are copper.
