Charles Sibley Born in Ohio, now a resident of Portsmouth, Va. Founded the art department at Old Dominion University in 1958 and taught there until he retired in 1989, with the rank of professor emeritus. This artist's powerful landscapes and expressive figurative work have arguably made him Hampton Roads' most accomplished and significant artist . His paintings can be found in public and private collections throughout the U.S. and are on permanent display at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk.

Old Dominion University Professor Emeritus Charles Kenneth Sibley, 83, died Aug. 13.
After completing his undergraduate work at Ohio State University, he was commissioned and served during six campaigns in the South Pacific and Asiatic theaters.
Sibley received graduate degrees from Columbia University and from Iowa State University and he also studied for two years at the Chicago Art Institute. Before coming to Norfolk in 1955, Sibley had taught at Duke University and at the University of Texas. He was the founder and head of the art department at Old Dominion University (formerly the Norfolk Division of William and Mary). He was the recipient of the Louis Jaffe Chair and retired from academic work in 1980.
