This doesn't look like a confederate bill, it looks more like a note or bond. It has nothing on the back. It says Twelve months after date Confederate States of America - No 297 will pay the bearer No 297 One Thousand Dollars with interest at 10 cents pr day.
Montgomery, the hand written date looks like May, 28, 1861
Signed by: Alex B. Glitheratt ? Register and Ed Elmorey Treasuer. The name spelling is kind of hard to distinguish.

Is this real, what is it, is it a good find? Value?

Is the paper brittle or is it stiff andwrinkled?
    2. TomR TomR, 14 years ago
It's not brittle at all, I can hold it at one end and it will have a slight bend. It is wavy. The paper almost looks like an oil soak finish if you know what I mean>

I know exactly what you mean, that usually means its a reproduction. Look real close, does it say reproduction or copy anywhere?
    4. TomR TomR, 14 years ago
No I don't see that on it, the very bottom reads receivable in payment of all dues except export duties. But looking at it with a magnifying glass the the discoloration across the top and some of the print quality comes into question.

So it's not an intentional reproduction (from souvenir shops ex.) Here is a site that I hope will be of some help:

      http://www.rebelstatescurrency.com/reproductions.html
    6. TomR TomR, 14 years ago
Thanks, that helped. I found the serial number and it looks like a worthless reproduction. Thanks goodness I through it into a bundle as an add on so I'm not out much. I hate learning lessons the hard way. :(

Yeah I hate when that happens. For the future, money that old almost has a tattered cloth feel to it. I have a few Civil War repros that I bought (knowingly) at a gift shop and they are exactly how you described.

I have the exact bill. It's part of a repo set I bought at a gift shop at Houston Airport back in the 1980s. Fun to have.

I have 3/4 of the exact same thing. Back is blank. U can tell by the material that it's super old. 1,000 dollars, 10 cents a day interest and check no 297 may 28th 1861 back Is blank. I'm just missing the left 1/4

      I have approximately 30 Confederate bills in my collection, intrigued by the 1000 bill. I have 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and the elusive 1000 bills.
Anyone shed any light on them please?
