This is a Japanese canteen as issued to the Imperial Marines. This is a late war style because the screw top cap was made of metal and the earlier ones were brass. A small chain is attached from the cap to the strap to prevent loss. Unlike army canteens, marine canteens almost always came with a canvas cover which helped keep the water cool. The numbers painted on the cover were the unit number and most likely the soldiers ID number.
