I inherited this Chippendale (Colonial Revival in today's terms) mahogany desk from my Aunt Helen who recently passed away at the age of 103! It was produced by Maddox, who made high quality colonial reproductions between the 1920s and 1950s. I'm told because of the details, it's probably on the older end, 20s or 30s. Although it looks empty in the photos, we do use it and I confess I removed the clutter before taking the pictures!

Never heard of Maddox before but judging from this piece they must have produced some really top quality pieces.

I have a Maddox drop front secretary and need to do some work on it. Is there a way to remove the desk insert to make it easier to work on?

      Thanks for any information

Looking at your desk, from the research I've done on secret compartments, there are probably one or two in your desk, behind the columns on each side of the central small door. Sometimes there is another at the back of the central compartment. You may know about this already, but when item are inherited often their secrets are not.

I recently purchased an identical piece also made by Maddison. I am not a collector but purchased it at an estate auction at a home my wife and I were purchasing. On a scale from 1-10 for its condition I would rate it a 9. We purchased it at an amazing price of $175. We do not intend to sell but we are curious about its true value. Can anyone tell me what it might be worth.

We also purchased several other items which I will be posting with the same question as to value. Our new home and the items purchased in the estate auction has given my wife and I a new appreciation for antiques.

I just purchased one today for $95. It is in good condition but mine has three instead of four drawers. its made of red mahogany.

I have a secretary that came from my Mother's house. She is in the Nursing Home with Alzheimer's. She doesn't even know what I'm talking about when I ask, so I'm seeking an answer somewhere else. There is a locked door behind the desk-table door and we cannot figure out how to open it. I've tried everything I could find on the internet. If I ever get it opened, I will make sure it never gets closed again. I don't think there is anything behind it but I sure could use the space for a couple of desktop items. Does anybody have any idea how to open this door???
