I bought this small rocking chair at a yard sale not having any plans for it and just, because it looked cool and old western or something. I almost turned it into a planter, but now I decided to refinish it and give to my nephew as a gift. I'm a nut about keeping the integrity of old items so before I take to restoring it, so I was wondering if anybody could tell me something about this chair. I've gathered that it's probably a nursing chair based on it's size and that it's got no arm rests. But as far as era any info would be great! The yard sale was here in Los Angeles if that helps any. Thanks!

I would say go for refinishing it. Someone already cut it down and tried to start refinishing it. I have no idea where you came up with it being a nursing chair. Perhaps you have more background on it than you are saying here. It looks to me like a chop job. No offense intended but any value is gone in terms of refinishing it and selling it for a profit.

I'm not planning on selling it. As I said in the description I'm just going to refinish it and get a cushion for it as a gift for my nephew. I don't know anything about rocking chairs, which is why I posted on here. I guessed it was a nursing/sewing chair based on similar looking chairs, that's all. Not sure what you mean by chop job. Someone obviously thought of refinishing it before and had a change of plans. I added the photo of the joint detail in hopes someone could possibly give a rough age of the chair or any helpful info at all.

Pixl, I agree that's it's probably a nursing rocker, or a ladies sewing rocker (and I don't see any evidence of a chop job): http://antiques.lovetoknow.com/Identifying_Old_Rocking_Chairs#1

Perhaps an image search for "sewing rocker" or "nursing rocker" will turn up something similar to yours. Maybe posting a 3rd photo taken more at ground level would show the leg proportions better.

I think they call these "T" Back chairs as far as style. I do not see any indication of any chopping done.

The seat would have been cane. You can buy replacement kits that are pretty easy to use. I'm sure there are many videos online to assist you as well.
