Hubby Found this for me at an estate sale. Needs refinishing...has contact paper on top : ( But all in all I Love it ! Can anyone give me information about this. Has original hardware and wooden wheels! Thanks for any information!
That is an awesome piece! Looks like a buffet to me because of the bottom doors instead of drawers, but of course you can use it for whatever you want. It also has locks on the top drawers for securing whatever was put in there, probably silverware. If you refinish it, post pictures of it after you're done! If it was mine, I would just rub it down with furniture oil and leave it as is. I like them looking old and used.
Your piece is a server, a smaller companion to the buffet found in larger dinning rooms. The style is transitional, from the Empire period into the Golden Oak period. It is more than likly a Larken Soap Co. premium from the early 1900's.
It may not have had a mirror on top, as you see on most buffet's, but a 6 to 8 inch back splash would have been common for these servers.
Thank You so much for the information. I like the natural look too. I will have to see how it looks and what will need to be done after I take the contact paper off the top.
Cindy,
As they say on Antiques Roadshow.....don't refinish it! Value will be lost. I would do as tikiray says above. You can always cover the top with a mirror, silver tray, etc.
It's a lovely piece.
Lovely Cindy, is it American? Agree with Marc i wouldn't touch it other than to dust
