This is an opalotype (like ambrotype but made on milk glass) that I once found on the fleamarket.
I bought it because of the frame, and didn't realise that it was an opalotype until I took it out of the frame.
It's hand painted/tinted with oil colour.
On the backside is written "16 Crown Street" and a name wich is very hard to read, the last name is "Carlson" but the surname is very hard to see.
So it must have been taken in an english-speaking country.
I'm so curious - what uniform is he wearing?
Is it Wm ..... short for William?
vetraio50 - thank you so much for the love and comment!
It could be... I will try to make one more photo of the text tomorrow..!
It's really hard to read!
Probably UK-- I don't know uniforms outside of US very well, but that is where I would start a search.
The medallion on his chest may narrow it down further.

Don't mean to be overly picky here, but "surname" and "last name" are the same thing! I think you meant that the first name is hard to see? The first name I thought I saw at first glance was "Egon" but I'm not sure the longer I look at it.
I think its either UK or Canada.Down Under cops dont wear breast badges per se.
10-4 on the Info that it must have been taken in an english-speaking country.
Can you tell us what country it was purchased in, please?
Could this be a non military uniform? Like an old british polis uniform?
