P-38, I have a few still in the wrapper.
As fhrjr2 said, P-38....they were worth more than gold...sure beat a hammer and a screwdriver.. If you hit it wrong, it would just smash the top of the can down. Of course, when you got something in an OD can, you knew you were in for a true culinary delight.
Ive had a few of these in the past ... ones that came in ration packs , i think they're better than ones you buy for ur kitchen !!!
Packrat, you've been there too! Actually some wasn't real bad in the field. Not real good either! Not something I dream of.
from looks of thing, this may be a P-51.....
I opened many a can of C rations with a p-38, but Never used one made in England. Got me wondering now, so will have to find out why.

Awesome, I got folks wondering without even realizing it!!! I thought it was a "regular" P-38 myself...I take it they all weren't made in England then.
Thanks for playin along everybody!!!
this looks to be the larger P51, which is 2" long; whereas the smaller P38 is 1-1/2" long. The P51 was made for mess kitchen use on larger cans; and considered easier to use with the increased size.

Tallcakes I believe you are correct we used to try and relocate these from the mess lol but loved my P38 also aside from my weapon one of the best things the Army issued me lol
In the Army we don't steal we just relocate an item till we done using it lmao long as it still in service it hasn't been stolen :)
I still have my Vietnam era Shelby P38 from my Navy years. Carried it on my key fob for many years; came in very handy many times...
I still have a P-38 issued during basic training at Fort Ord 1961
