Hi can anyone educate and would like about this picture. I was an estate sale find. All I know it is old, but how old. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance???? I put Victorian in the sub category, but guessed.
In my two decades as a photo restorer I found that a lot of information about a photo can be gained by removing it from the frame (especially if the frame is original and not previously opened). Often there is writing on the back of the photo, or on the edges which may be covered by the front of the frame. As well, often times there are things inside the frame other than the photos, like pieces of paper with stuff written on them. Some of these items are like miniature time capsules!
Looks to be a "charcoal print". They are usually found in the 16" X 20" size and are often enlargements of smaller images and enhanced where details are lost.
Most of these are from the very late 19th century, but the process was popular into the early 20th century.
The image itself looks to be very late 19th century, but the frame looks later. Maybe an early reframe or just an early 20th century example.
