I always seem to find an interesting piece of art work after the monthly clearance sale at Volunteer's. So today was no exception. A great mid-century abstract harbor scene titled " Mediterranee' ". It's done by Croatian artist Tugomir Huberger. He's listed on most of the art finder pay sites but there's very little bio or any info for that matter online. He passed away about 14 years ago. The few works I was able to see the prices on did not sell for very much. This one has me a bit puzzled. It is on canvas, but it's mounted to a piece of board and not a stretcher. As usual they always tear the back paper off to see if anything is hidden (money etc.) . That exposed the inventory number and the word "Process!"on the mounting board. Was this the artists approval for this work ?? There is a label from what I think is a long gone German art store "Sartos Druck" with the paintings title. So is this a print or oil on canvas? It looks very convincing even under magnification. Maybe a serigraph (advanced silk screen process) on canvas ? There are a few scrapes and nicks to the canvas and frame but I can live with that. An interesting and colorful addition to my mid-century art gallery. -Mike-
I love the movement in this art Mike. It's a good work and appealing enough to hang! (most I find aren't)
Thanks Karen :) I never liked modern art all that much when I was younger. I appreciate it much more now. Mid-century modern pieces always remind me of the furniture my mom had when we were growing up. So I guess it's part nostalgia.
stunning!!!!
Hi, very strange, I have exactly the same painting, the same label on the backside. even the signature on exactly the same place. I thought it was a painting but can it be some kind of print on canvas?
Yes Chedman they're just a very good quality canvas print. This one is actually lifting from the board it's mounted too. Not sure where the original is, but I'm sure it's probably in a museum or private collection. :)
Did you ever find out anything ? He use to live in Erlangen Germany. If you know anyone that speaks German you might get more info. My uncle did some work at one tells and received several paintings. He gave one toy Mother. She kept in a closet for years. When I got older, I asked for it. It still hangs in my home.
Tugomir was married to my grandfather's sister's daughter (nee Hastreiter). I have some framed charcoal drawings, a nude dated 1950 and a still life dated 1960, that hung in my parents home. He did charcoal drawings f my grandparents and uncle when they visited Germany in 1960. Don't know too much more about him. Hope this helps unlock more of the mystery...
Thanks so much alio73. :)
I have the same. Mine is printed onto a canvas, I was told mine is the original. I will get some pix later.
