This is a cameo of hope. You can see her anchor and a ship .First time I have seen a ship on the cameo. The setting is gold from around 1860.

Considering that the diff. colours in the diff. layers of shell in these are used to produce a clear image still amazes me & I love & appreciate the artistry.

I have not seen this particular composition before; it is truly very unusual. The addition of the ship to the scene confirms the interpretation of this & similar pieces: she represents not just hope, but hope for someone at sea. No doubt this theme was especially popular with tourists from the sea-faring nation of Great Britain.

      See: http://cameotimes.com/index.php/profiles-1/allegorical/anchor-of-hope

      for additional examples.
