The trunk was made by the "Reliable Trunk Company 407 So Main Street Los Angeles Cal". It has a brass Corbin lock No 4A5119 from Corbin Cabinet Lock Co, New Britain Cont.
It also has a Great Northern Railway Form 3044 with number on top RHS of 1-14 10m F. Check No 790300 United States Customs Label "Baggage in Bond" to be delivered to Collector of Customs and it looks like 191... or 19/..

The trunk is in the UK now so I guess it was made in California, went overseas and came back into the US customs maybe in the 1910-20 period, and then somehow found its way to the UK where I have had it for the last 50 years!

Does anyone know what the outer material is on this steamer trunk? Cow hide over wood?? Certainly looks like leather corner strips and brass/steel fittings.

Would it be possible to get key for the Corbin Lock???

I think this trunk has a vulcanized fiber covering -- made to look like leather but much more durable. The patina on this is just great!

Very cool trunk. I love the stickers on these, they add to the story. I stumbled across this place, hopefully they can help you with a key.:
