I purchased this rather large painting from the auction of a very wealthy eccentric local man. It is framed in what appears to be a gold-leafed frame. It is not signed but appears to be from the school of Gabriello Mattei. I am hoping that someone can provide me with more information. I know that it is Maria Theresa of Austria and that she was the mother of Marie Antoinette.

Thank you, Solver, for finding the Meytens connection.

Addendum: Reverse states : Attributed to Carle Vanloo

VL, here is another very similar portrait "so it's possible" your portrait is "after" the portrait by Martin van Meytens the Younger (1695–1770) who was the "preferred portraitist at Marie Theresa's imperial court." I haven't a clue who the artist is of your painting.

See the third portrait from the bottom, "Martin van Meytens Yr., 'Maria Theresia as Archduchess,' in the mid-1730s, Oil on canvas, 91 x 72 cm" from "Art History News," October 24, 2014:

The portrait of "Maria Theresia of Austria" by Gabriello Mattei is shown here on the "Grand Ladies" site. Her dress is painted in more vibrant colors:

My God, Solver, You are correct again! I did find information on Martin Van Meytens but never found the similar portrait. I believed that my painting was just dull because it needed to be cleaned. A priest art-historian had looked at this painting and stated that he believed that it was painted in the 1700s. The guy who owned it had a large gallery in his house and I have a photo of it hanging on his wall. He also had some vintage WWII planes in his front yard. What is your opinion?

I would like to see a picture of along the edge of painting. This looks to be a copy but what kind of copy can be determined by looking along the edges. Wondering if its a Print on Canvas? When a painting is done you will have paint that is uneven along the edges, if it is a Print on canvas it will be even and straight all the way around.

I will try to take more pictures in the am but there are globs of paint in sections. With the collections the collector had I doubt that it is a print. There are globs of paint on the front in places. This man had a whole large gallery of paintings that sold for a lot of money. A priest at St Vincent College looked at it and stated it was very old. I have his name saved in my paperwork. I hope that someone can help because I would like to know. I do not know if I can take it out of the frame but I will try to take close ups. It was relined at some point in the 1940s and has some in painting.

It will take a little longer to add photos. More difficult to take down than I thought. Furniture to be moved etc. Hopefully, new photos soon. My wife is an artist and states not a print.
