Beautiful print ! Strange how they were admired & hated in the same era. Their images put on money at the same time they were scheduled for extinction. I might be a bit biased being raised by a Creek. Many early artists seemed to admire their customs & dress.

that is a great observation my good and blundering friend! and they also fought for and advocated for the rights of native peoples - but the opposition is all about $$ and that almost always trumps in the political / judicial / financial conspiracy. you were raised Creek? i often confuse them w/ the Cree, with whom i'm more familiar.

The area around where AL, GA & TN meet. My area was Creek & Choctaw mostly, which were part of the Cherokee Nation. My "nanny" was an orphan when they were closing one of the last reservations in the S.E. & a local doctor adopted her.

i have a couple of very good friends who are an odd mix of Cherokee and Scottish, and one who is Cherokee and Japanese.

i think Joy Harjo is Muscogee/Creek too. i went to Ecuador w/ her and quite a few other really good Indian people in 1992.

Ho2, the Chief of the Baton Rouge (Red Sticks) who was defeated in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend by Andy Jackson with much if his force friendly, civilized Cherokees, was Bill Weatherford, a half Indian half Scot. When Jackson became President & started the Indian removal, he also removed the Indians who had been his allies. Sorry state of affairs as usually exhibited by the U.S. gov't. when dealing with the Native Americans. A very dark cloud over Amer. history! (Mainly pushed by Georgia land owners)

and repeated across the land despite romantic notions about Native Americans held by the general public throughout many years. just like today, the american people has alwas been able to stomach any kind of evil behavior by our government if it's packaged right.
