Hello CW friends! May I please have some help identifying this vase?
I purchased this online, quite cheaply, because I really liked the shape and glaze of it.
I think it has a very European look to it, and based on the little I have learnt think it looks before WWII, possibly even Jurgendstil. I don't know really but was hoping the smarties here might.
I have looked online for the mark which appears to be a crown over a J or F L? and production number 489. I have not yet identified the maker although they are possibly well known and obvious!
Height 21cm
Thanks all!!
UPDATE
My thanks in particular to Jensen who identified this vase as Danish:
"Mark on the bowl: a crown and the initials PIE intertwined (used 1918-1955) for ‘P.Ipsens Enke’ (‘P.Ipsen’s Widow’)" .
IT IS EUROPEAN!! hold on ill find it for ya!!
Jensen or cogito or Amphorapottery had one these posted!!!!
Thanks Sean! Smarty!!
I thought Jensen or one of the others would know....maybe I liked it so much because I had seen one here!
Your very welcome Karen!!
It's P. Ipsens Enke ('P. Ipsen's Widow) from Denmark! You can read a little bit about the history and marks here: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/131668-vases-and-bowl-ipsen-denmark-1903-an
Hi
racer4four
Nice one,,,i love it.
Regards
Alan
Thank you Sean and Jensen!
So this is the later mark continued until 1955. And the less popular and common (!) glaze seen cheaply in Europe!
Jensen would you have any idea on the rime of this vase? Thanks so much.
Sorry: the time this was made!
Thanks Alan! I really like it too.
It was made after 1917 (shown by the mark), but I am certain that it is an earlier design - it looks very much like other things they made in the early 20th century, so I'd say that it was designed around 1910. There's a lot of (later) Ipsen around, but not so much of this kind, so I think it's a great find!
Thanks Jensen for your help. If you think it a great find I will too!
I liked it anyway.
Its a Beauty ;-)
It is definitely beautiful!!!
Lucky you, it’s beautiful!
Thank you Surfdub, Scott and Mary for your love and comments. Beauty gets the vote!
Mmm what a great vase. And its been identified! It's a shame when such beautiful things go unknown, despite being marked. What a great community
Thanks Fran. Yes, CW is a great community and without them I would have searched a very long time!
This is really nice. I too love that shape and the color/glaze! Good lookin' out!
Hi racer4four - I finally managed to get the Ipsen book from the library and looked up your vase. Apparently it is the work of sculptor Charles Boegh who worked at Ipsen around 1900, and their new glaze, 'dekorativglasur' (developed around 1900), was used on his vases. 26 different vases in the catalogue are by him. Your vase (no. 489) is found the first time in the 1903 catalogue, so it really is an early vase (produced for some time, apparently)!
Jensen thanks so much for doing this research for me. You really are our pottery go to person!
It's wonderful to know more about this vase, it remains a favorite and I properly look at it every day. Clearly the "new" glaze was a winner! Thanks again. Karen
Oh, I wanted to know and it's fun doing this kind of research! A similar vase has been sold here recently (I know an antiques dealer and I saw on his page that he had one and that it had been sold). Unfortunately, I can't see what it sold for, but I would guess something between AUD 100 and 200. These early ones are not so easy to come by.
Thanks again. It's a keeper for now!
