This I have found out is a pen rest. Apparently made near the turn of the 19th century. Not one - of - a - kind. Some of these has the owl's head hinged and an ink well is installed. Not this one, this is only a pen rest. Note the markings on the owl's underside. The letters in German, I understand is a way that copyright was done.

    Any thoughts?

    8. Alan2310 Alan2310, 10 years ago
it's in one word, meaning Patented.
Try to take the 4 picture front.

It is Austrian and the GE Schutzt is the maker. If you google it you will find plenty of it for sale but few buyers.

Definition: Geschutzt is a mark sometimes found on antiques of German origin which translates to protected or copyrighted; similar in meaning to the United State patented and pat. pend. marks

OK, I need to know something. In the picture there are obvious spaces between the G - E & S. It does not look at all like one word without spaces. Please clarify that for me if you will.

Human hand are not perfect, because I beleive this was hand punch
    16. greatexpectations greatexpectations, 10 years ago
antiquerose I have seen that image before, but the difference is that linked image is an inkwell. The owl's head pivots open.

fhrjr2/Alan2310 Yes looks hand punched and did not use the same size type it appears

It is Austrian Bronze and there does seem to be few takers.. prices seem to run
1k + . Would have to be a zealot for these kinds of pieces and some fairly deep pockets.

The last two numbers in pic 3 I can make out 7, 8 but not sure if first is a 1 or not.
