I recently bought this chair off CraigsList. I'm pretty sure it's an antique, but I still want to know kinda how old it is. I looked for stamps or tags, but there weren't any visible ones. So, I started looking into how to date your furniture and found that it can be dated by its wood and fastenings. So I began looking into that and here's what I think I know...
~ I think the wood is either Oak or Maple.
~ The nail I extracted seems to be steel, but could be iron (it's mostly black with some rust).
~ The shaft is drawn and seems to have pinch marks on the underside of the head and opposite sides of the upper part of the shaft.
~ Two or three of the other nails in my chair look like they have a rose-head, but that's all I can see of those.
~ There some more nails (4 or 5) which have little heads and I think wire shafts, but I can't really see without taking apart the chair.
Just Wondering if anyone can tell me about the age of this nail so that I can get an idea of the age of the chair.
