Need help in identifying this plane. It is 7" long, 2" wide. Near the locking lever is a round area with a cast in "PATD 6-12-97". I think it's a Ward but only guessing from photos I've seen on Google. Underneath the blade is an adjustment lever with a long patent number stamped in 1.1788.7.24.88.8.3.97. Appreciate any help. Thanks!!!
That is a low angle block plane and probably part of what is known as the 60 series. While they were introduced in 1898 the finish on this one looks more like early 1900's. Use the measurements below to identify which model you have and then research it from there. Block planes are not the most profitable collectible but if you happen to get one someone needs to complete a collection it becomes more profitable. I have several in the shop but only one or two with the original iron. Naturally having the original iron is a good thing.
Model Length Width Adj. Throat Trim
No. 60 6 inches 1-3/8? iron Yes Nickel
No. 60 1/2 6 inches 1-5/8? iron Yes Japanned
No. 61 6 inches 1-3/8? iron No Nickel
No. 62 14 inches 2? iron Yes Nickel
No. 63 7 inches 1-5/8? iron No Nickel
No. 64 12-1/2 inches 2? iron No Nickel
No. 65 7 inches 1-5/8? iron Yes Nickel
No. 65 1/2 7 inches 1-5/8? iron Yes Japanned
I would say you have the # 65 1/2 because of the measurements and finish. The brass knob dates it after 1905 but keep in mind that these were produced well into the 1950's.
Thanks to fhrjr2 for your helpful information! Did not realize there were so many planes in the series. tap43
Tap43 - This plane was frequently called the Cadillac of block planes. The ones I have I still use and wouldn't part with. Mine will be passed on to my son's.
