Russell, C. D. (Clarence D.), 1895-1963.
American cartoonist and illustrator, best known for his Pete the Tramp strip. This is an original drawing in a letter he wrote to Evelyn Nichols, actress in play "Abie's Irish Rose" and my cousin. Evelyn was in the long-running play on Broadway for many years. She moved to California in the late 1920s and her cartoonist friends Percy Crosby and C.D. Russell missed her company. Original cartoons were sent to her in letters. This original cartoon, I believe, is a play on the characters in "Abie's Irish Rose" who seem angry and sad that Evelyn has left. The artist has noted: "New Sky Line Of New York City Since You Left." CD Russell's most-famous cartoon was "Pete The Tramp" and I have included the cover of a book that I own about Pete's adventures.
