Good evening ladies and gents, I recently purchased this desk (ok, I purchased it today, and am a little excited as this is my first large piece eek!) and was wondering if you wonderful folks out there had any idea of it's origin or possible age. The antique dealer I purchased it from thinks it might be Italian based on the carving, but his window for age was "1800s to early 1900s" correct me if I'm wrong, but that's a pretty wide margin. My other question was how do I clean and maintain it in a manner that will prolong it's life and do it justice? The dealer will be fixing the crack in the desk surface and putting the lock mechanism back in. I also have both original keys. There are capital Ds on the lock mechanism if that sheds light on date or origin. Regardless of where it came from or how old it is I love this piece and it is destined for a place of honor in our loft.
Thank you for your input Phil, I had wondered about the functionality as a secretary , as most of them that I have seen have been slightly different in the desk structure and had a more cabinet based top part as opposed to the cubbies this one has. I seem to recall reading somewhere that there was allot of renewed interest in replicating historical examples as the designer/purchaser found appealing rather than what would necessarily go together historically.
