I got this from a flea market. It is a soldier portrait done with a chalk-like material. Can anyone tell me the war that this soldier would have fought in by the uniform he is wearing?

During the War for Southern Independence, volunteer companies often had their own style of uniform, so that makes it difficult. My guess is Spanish American.
Your guy post dates the Civil War.
I cannot see clear details, but my initial reaction is that it is foreign. Some additional photos with details would be helpful.

Scott. Foreign to who? CW is international! LOL!
Will see what I can do.
Thinking about it, I don't remember the plum/feather being popular anywhere but the States. I'm leaning more toward Span./Amer. War even though appears to be a hot colour uniform to wear in warm climes. Those that have experience, know that quartermasters never worried about that sort of thing anyway. Come to think of it, it's probably strange that our 1st troops in Nam weren't supplied with skis & goggles!
You make a good point Blunder!
To clarify-- NOT a US soldier.
Additional photos would be helpful.

Scott, Will try to add more soon. I relied on photos that I had rather than taking me own. That was a mistake.
Here are some more pictures as promised.
Hope all those brass/bronze things hanging over his shoulder are for something better than making his bunk up correctly for a month or good conduct etc..
I used to know what those things were called...damn if I can remember!
I still don't see anything to make a definite attribution other than it is NOT a US military uniform.
I would look at Europe.

Thanks Scott! I think he looks a bit German...
Me too!
Trachten Hat with Gamsbart?
Perhaps a civil service uniform?
and...PA has a lot of German families...
Es ist wahr.
He looks a bit like Dr Watson! BTW which was your favorite Watson, David Burke or Edward Hardwicke, I thought they were both really good - still loving those DVDs :)
Newfld,
He does look like Watson. If I had to pick, I would say Edward Hardwicke, but I loved them both! Glad that you like the DVDs. I watch them over and and over and...
