I love this carved butterfly/moth from France. I was told that it was carved horn. If anyone has any information as to possible maker etc. I would appreciate it very much!

Is it clear on the back? If so I would say no it's not bone. But maybe an early 40's plastic like lucite.

No, It is not clear and does looked carved but I will examine it again.

This is carved horn, not bone. I made a mistake...

Defiantly carved horn. Front looks a little later for horn (decoish) but it could be a little earlier. The pin on the back is absolutely right for the period. I love french nouveau horn jewellery, you'll find a few examples on my page and I have a few newbies to post.

Jewels, Thank you so much for confirming that this is horn! I will look for the ones that you posted.

kyratango, Are you saying that you feel it is horn or that it is not horn? Thank you!

Defiantly horn, Kyra will also confirm that the brooch fastenings are made specifically for horn jewellery. They heat the horn up a slide the fastenings inside, so they are actually embedded in the horn. Always with the brass ends & c-clasp and steel pin.

Also, another thing, it looks a little dehydrated. Wipe some almond oil on it & leave it for a few hours, then wipe it off. Repeat the following week, then annually.

This will prevent prevent cracking and keep it looking fresh.

Jewels, This is so similar! I guess this just verifies things a bit more. This one looks a bit deco also! Thank you so much!

Hi Vintage Lamp, I think you might of asked me about the ingredients of your almond oil? I'm not sure, I just used one I got from my local health food store. You can use other natural vegetable oils too. I've used a good quality olive oil (I do mine once a year).

Make sure you post a photo when you've done. The oil should bring back a little scene to your pin.

Jewels, Thanks so much! I will be sure to post a picture post oil application!
