Trying to identify this chair. It was my great grandmothers. She was from Pennslyvania. It has several coats of paint. I had thought of re-finishing it but don't want to hurt it, if its rare.

CindB has one of these also! She just recently posted it...how cool is that, a chair I've never seen and now twice in one week!!!
Mine is the one in the second link that CindB posted. After LOTS of image searches online I've concluded that these chairs (commonly referred to as "brace-back chairs") came in so many variations that it would be almost impossible to find two that were identical unless they were made as a set.
Variations include spindle shapes, number of spindles, shape of top, seat shape, leg braces, etc. At first glance they can look similar but a discerning eye will soon find the major/minor differences!
I've also learned that these chairs could be as old as the late 18th Century, but also had renewed popularity in the 1950s as reproductions.
