This is Pola Negri, silent film actress on a Canco Tin. I do not believe that I ever found out for certain what came in these tins but the artwork is wonderful! The newspaper clipping was an added bonus inside of the tin. Pola got bad publicity for acting bizarre at Rudolph Valentino's funeral.
She started several ladies' fashion trends, including red painted toenails, fur boots, and turbans.

Wonderful container, VL. About Henry Clive, courtesy of Grapefruit Moon Gallery. This site states "This led to work painting screen stars such as Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino and Polga Negri for the Canco Company for use on tins and pencil boxes as give aways to silent moviegoers."

Canco was a division of the American Can Co., New York. From the Sussex-Lisbon Area Historical Society, Inc., "Tin/Can Company Histories:"

"American Can Company - formed in 1901 from the purchase and consolidation of sixty tin container companies representing one hundred twenty-three factories. After the merging, a number of factory sites were shut down or sold. Edwin Norton, a leader in the formation, became the newly found enterprise's first president with headquarters in Chicago. Those firms remaining in operation were assigned a number that was printed on the tin/can. For example, Hasker & Marcuse Manufacturing Company in Richmond, VA was assigned 50-A. Any tin or can found with these designations were manufactured after 1901. In some cases the initials "A C Co." were used. From 1910/12 until 1921, the word CANCO was also used."

According to "Advertising & Selling" August 1922, Beautebox, Inc."has recently been organised to market a special line of decorated metallic utility boxes, humidors. etc. manufactured by the American Can Co."
