I have 3 of these chairs. they look like they use to be a caned seat by the marks on the underside. The spindles are beautifully done, I believe they are machined. I am not positive about that. The top has a great curve to it. The 3 front spindles are shaped and the side spindles are smooth. I would like to know more about these too.

You are pretty much on the target. The slots on the spindle bottom ( looks like it is made for a screwdriver) is where it was mounted on an old lathe for turning. Same goes for your evaluation of the seat. I would call them vintage chairs.

The screw looking piece is actually a doweled wooden screw the is pinned at an angle, they are not metal as I had originally thought when I first started looking into them :)

That is NOT A WOODEN SCREW, that is where the spindle was mounted on the lathe to turn it. The slot is where it mounted on the lathe. You cut a slot in the wood to mount it on the lathe. It is easier today but take my word that IS NOT a screw. Don't even go after it with a screwdriver.

lol, thats just what I said above. Its a WOOD Dowel

OK, you can call it a dowel but it is still the tail stock end of the spindle.

Your pictures confuse me a bit. The first two pictures appear to have slab seats and the last two just the opposite. You said you have three of them and obviously they aren't matched. Although I suspect they are all antiques or close to it.

ok, fhrjr2, i posted more pics of the same chair. It use to bea caned seat i believe. They then replaced it with a saddle seat. I'm assuming for strength after the cane gave out.
