This was my great-grandfathers. I never had a chance to ask him about it so I have no clue of its origin or age. Any help would be appreciated. I believe he served in the Marine Corps?

To my knowledge, these types of belt buckles were never officially sanctioned by the Army as a whole, but they seem to have proliferated anyway.
