      First of all, it would need to be authenticated as real and not a copy or replica. Cannot enlarge your photos. -- Second, in 1853 there was an 1853 minted and also an 1853 with the D mintmark (the mintmark would be on the reverse directly above the "2 1/2 D.") - There were 1.4 million minted of the 1853 but only 3,178 minted with the D mintmark so value would have a considerable difference.

      Thank you for that info aghcollect.....I will get it authenticated. Also, my knowledge is limited to coins, collecting, etc...I looked for the D mintmark but found what looked like three small lines above the "2 1/2 D"......I will try to improve the pictures!

      The first link shows a standard quarter eagle coin without the mintmark (reverse side); http://coinauctionshelp.com/Liberty_Head_2.50_Quarter_Eagle.html#.VOI_MPnF9vk
      The second link shows an 1853 with the D mark;

      Sorry, the first link just went to a "generic" site.
      Second link shows the 1853 D - without the D you would just see the ends of the arrows beneath the eagle image.

      Ok, thanks again aghcollect...as much as I mentally willed there to be a D mintmark/ there was none...so I understand it's value, once authenticated, will be considerably less...

      Incidentally, at current gold bullion spot value it would be about $150, but if you have an authenticated coin and it has been kept in that holder so very little wear the value could be about $385-$425 (estimated) - value will always take condition into consideration. - And gold spot value changes daily ($1230 an oz today, but topped $1880 an oz in Sept 2011) - Save it as a family heirloom or if anything as an investment item.
