The cross stitch and long stitch embroidery, which may be silk or polychrome,
was done by Margaret Currey, age 10 years old, in 1803. The main theme of
the sampler is that of Christ on the Cross with Our Blessed Mother and St.
John on each side of the Cross on Calvary, while angels are depicted above.
The bottom of the sampler has a house, possibly a farm house, with animals.
The text at the top of the sampler is one that is for those that journey through
life (travelers), who should meditate and contemplate on the true meaning of
the cross. Sorrows are in our journey, but God in his mercy will make the
journey with us. The colors on what appears to be linen, has stains and
discoloration, and I believe the sampler is behind glass (non-glare). The
sampler does lack the alphabet; however, the sampler was meant to depict a
Christian theme in Margaret and her family. The sampler is expertly
completed, considering the age of Margaret. The staining (foxing and
discoloration) can be remedied by a textile conservator.
The work that went into these pieces is unreal & would of been so hard on the eyes
