Anyone have any ideas as to what this really is? It is marked 1762 New Bedford with matching #222 on top and bottom pieces. I know its not that old but really would like to know what it was used for or what it is. Got any ideas let me know.
I'm guessing a compass case.
That could be right. Hope others on CW can help.
I'd say compass case too ;-)
Thanks for the help so far. I am not sure what it is. If it is a compass case then its the only one like it. I cannot find anything similar in any type search. Wording brings no better results either. If anyone has ideas as to where I can find it please let me know. It has to have 221 more made ahead of it but where are they?
OK. Let's go for a marine chronometer case. Actually, it looks more like for that use. Bet you find it now.
Nope, no match to name, numbers or anything similar. I can find no reference to a company by that name even making anything along those lines. I reckon it will have to remain unsolved.
It may be the angle of the photo but it looks like the bottom number is 322, not that it matters.
It looks relatively recent, maybe 1970's from India. I'm going to guess it was a souvenir item from the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
Thanks AzTom. It is just the photo, numbers match 222. thank you I will check out the other idea on origin that you suggested. Thanks much.
