My husband picked up this helmet at an estate sale this weekend and he thinks it is from WWII, can anyone tell me how to identify and/or date a helmet?

this is a vietnam period ground troops helmet and liner , ww2 helmets had a stiched chinstrap and yours have metal terminations ,the liner webbing i notice has A washers fixing it in place so its post 1964 in manufacture after 1972 the liner webbing was removable ,check the t1 chinstrap buckle for an anchor symbol indicative of nam lids ,i also notice your liner is missing its nape strap ,these are easy and dirt cheap to find even here in the united kingdom ,while your at it put a nice mitchell vietnam camo cover on it to complete the look ,hope this is of some help ,kind regards james
Thank you for the great information I will check the chinstrap buckle and post back with what I find. I appreciate the lesson! :D
your very welcome ,us helmets are not my area of expertise but i know a little to get by ,inspect the liner webbing ,it should have an ink stamp and DLA code or DSA showing the exact year 1970 would simply be 70 ,let us know your findings ,regards james
I agree with JamesC , it's a very nice example of a US issue M1 helmet as used in the Vietnam war, these were usually used with a camo helmet cover , and are very easy to get on ebay if you ever wanted to complete the set, I also notice the liner is missing the nape strap for the back of the neck, those are also easy to find and very inexpensive, your helmet probably dates from between 1966 - early 1970's era.
