I stumbled upon this canister set at my first estate auction and fell in love with its quirkiness immediately. I snatched it up for $10. Originally, there were 4 pieces, the smallest canister had a crack and ended up breaking. A few years ago, I did a lot of research and found nothing. Looked for more info the other day and stumbled upon two blog posts by antiques expert Mark Hill out of London referring to the elusive "Flower Painter" artist, who signed all work with a four-petaled flower. Apparently, the identity of this Italian artist remains unknown, but is believed to be pre-1956 and thought to have been part of a coop. From what I understand, some collectors have made it their life's mission to identify this artist, to no avail.
Other than the posts by Mark Hill, I have been able to find NOTHING about other pieces by this artist because I don't know what to search for! I have tried searching terms "the flower painter" and it yields paintings of flowers, I have searched every possible combination of terms regarding the markings, Italian, coop, mid-cen, etc. Nothing! Is anyone familiar with this mysterious artist and able to steer me in the right direction? I would like to see more pieces. And I am a novice to all of this. What "category" do these pieces fall into?
