I am completely dumbfounded. I can find nothing about this vase, or even something similar. The dimensions are: 10 7/16" tall 6 1/4" at widest point 2 1/2" base 1 5/16" opening. This was a vase that my grandmother had. There is no information about when, where, or how she obtained it. Light does shine through indicating porcelain. There is a mark on the bottom that does not appear to be a fake. However, I have found no other mark similar online. This is the only Nippon item I have and would prefer not to purchase a book for this one item.
Please if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. Thank you
Lovely vase.
Thank you. I just wish I knew more about it from my grandmother.
"Nippon" would denote pre-1921 but I cannot see the rest of the mark - I can read the 'Hand painted' but I cannot clearly see the emblem in the center.
When I zoom in it looks like it is two people facing each other. Perhaps a man and a woman? It could also be two people with their arm curled in front of them looking over their shoulders at each other? I cannot imagine anything other than people. However, I may be totally wrong. I will post another photo.
The second photo of the mark is "lightened." Hopefully, it will show better.
Very hard to see the hallmark. I thought it was two birds!
Yeah, I have tried to get a better picture. However, it is just not a clear image to begin with.
I think it’s Imperial Nippon 1890-1910. I’ll see what else I can find out
I don’t know if you know this but Nippon means Japan. The Noritake company, who had several Japanese companies producing for them, adopted the name Nippon as their own, with the result that most Nippon collectors clubs/societies only collect pieces with those particular marks, although many other exports from Japan bear the word “NIPPON” or Dai Nippon-Great Japan
maryh1956 thank you for some more information. I did know that Nippon means Japan, and that there was the "McKinley Act" that required all foreign companies to clearly mark the country of origin. However, I did not know the rest. What points you to Imperial Nippon?
