After the great support from CW regarding the last bowl, I decided to post this one. This is the second fully complete bowl that I've carved. I want to see if anyone (fhrjr) can guess the type of wood it is made from. Also, no cracks! Enjoy!

I can think of several woods that would carve out looking like that. Spalted Maple being one I have worked with most but cypress and bocote will carve with the same appearance yet when cut they are totally different pattern.

I'm going to have to print this so I can show my friend as she has some bowls similar but alas there not yours.

Sorry! I forgot to tell the answer! The tree this comes from we call Sweet Gum. I happen to agree with fhr, that this is spalting going on here. But, here is more about the Sweet Gum tree: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquidambar

This tree drops those terrible spike balls that are big enough to break your ankle on.

Zowie, thank you again for the kind words. It really is all about the wood. Thank you!

I am familiar with the tree and the fruit but never worked with the wood. The fruit is as bad as a walnut, butternut or even a Jacaranda pod. Not something for the front yard to mow under. Although we have a 150 year old Jacaranda in our front yard I hate to mow under. I learned to tolerate it when I found out I can sell those big pods and the Spanish moss.

It sure is about the wood but it takes someone with some talent to bring out the best in it which you have seemed to of done. My friends pieces come from Africa somewhere I believe.
