Spectacular huge heavy reddish-bronze letter opener in the form of a beautiful Indian Maiden done in the Art Nouveau style.
It's 11" long and 1.5" wide at the widest part, and engraved on the back "Dec. 25, 1901" (obviously a Christmas present).
It is very substantial and heavy- just under 12 oz on the postal scale, and the condition is actually way nicer viewed with the naked eye than appears in the pictures (for some reason they really accentuate the age-wear!)
Signed A. Reimann (on the front), a famous German artist who founded the Reimann School in 1902. The number 1533 is incised on the back.
Oddly enough, a short while ago I bought a wonderful bronze Art Nouveau inkwell with a stylized eagle's head also from the very same A. Reimann (I also posted this on Collectors Weekly show and tell).
Small world sometimes...!
STUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, SEAN68- I thought so too (it certainly wasn't cheap!!).
Strange thing is that there "appears" to be considerable more age-wear on these pics than you can see in person! Especially around the eyes- which shows almost NO wear in person. I think the camera used was simply "too" unforgiving because it actually enhanced the (minimal!) age-wear...
Very pretty.
