This piece is approximately 60" tall X 30" wide X 11" deep. I acquired this at an auction. It has 5 dragons - ying/yang shown on sun with 5 dragon eggs- very intricate carved details throughout .
We were told it is probably iron or yew wood - possible dating back to the 1800's. I did NOT find a signature - but that doesn't mean it's not there
it's probably Japanese made in Chinese style - most likely one-of-a-kind - ball represents the ever seeing eye of the world - my search indicates the 5 dragons represent the 5 planets visible to the naked eye
I will post more pictures titled "Grand Dragon" to show the 4 of the 5 dragon heads
I have no clue as to it's value - just that it's hand carved details is beyond fantastic. If anyone has any idea where to look for signature - or any other recommendations will be greatly appreciated..
Count the number of claws (toes) on each foot. Chinese imperial dragon has 5, non-imperial, 4; Japanese, 3.
Oh, and that ball is the Flaming Pearl. Dragons are frequently depicted chasing after it.
@ noob - it has 3 claws - in at least 3 locations - we were told it was Japanese made in Chinese style - your information appears to confirm this.
We actually just purchased this item 2 days ago.
Thank you for taking the time to provide additional insight on this piece.
