The Barber series started in 1892 and lasted until 1915. It was a short lived series in U.S. coinage but one that is quite popular today with collectors. This 1st year issue coin is mint state as far as the condition. You can also see that is was minted at the New Orleans Mint because of the tiny "O" located on the reverse (tails) at the spot under the base of the eagles tail feathers. This coin never saw circulation. It was plucked very early and saved/put away thus the incredible brilliant condition. The scratches you see in pic two (the reverse or tails) are on the plastic holder the coin has been put in, rather than on the coin itself. Coins with this degree of preservation are very scarce.
Nice coin,119 years old. Thanks for sharing with us.
Thank you Lee for taking a look & commenting. My pleasure.
My son has the following in silver dollars and the ratings are not from a professional but just from us.what would be the best way to get them rated without costing more than the value of the coins.
1-1880 p-very good
1-1882 o-very fine
2-1889 o-good
1-1890 p-good
1-1896 p-fine
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks Lee
Hi Lee, Each of these dates are common date Morgan dollars and it would NOT be worthwhile to have them graded by any third party grader. (costs of about $20 per coin) Each has about $23-$25 in silver value but little more because of the condition. I would never get rid of them because silver value will one day mean that each of these coins will be worth $200 each regardless of their condition.
Thank you for your input, sounds like very good abvice.
