Portneuf is the name by which this pottery is known in Canada as it was originally thought to have been made somewhere in Quebec near a village of that name. It was very rarely marked, according to Finlayson, author of the standard Canadian reference. He records one marked piece which is illustrated in the book.
It is the same as the mark on this piece !
-John Thomson was a Glasgow pottery, and this mark is known on a piece printed with California Gold rush, so likely c.1849.
+I have since learned of an American text "Spatterware and sponge"
by Robacker 1978 whose dust jacket shows a sugar bowl in same pattern.
I don't have access to the book to see if that example is signed .Anyone help?

We recently sold our 125 year old cottage that was full of some very old treasures. I have several pieces of Portneuf Pottery as well as Quimper, those are easy to identify, but how do you value them? My bigger challenge is going to be in finding the origins and values of some beautiful platters I also have.
