California coin facts says these were sold as trinkets and bangles after 1864 because the U.S. mint assayed the fifty cent piece and found out there was only seventeen cents worth of gold in it. It goes on to say the holes were drilled and the pieces were put on either a chain or bracelet. In June 1883 the secret service stopped the sale of them entirely. They were privately made coins that violated the private coinage law of 1864. They certainly have a colorful history.
