Purchased this in a storage auction. All the parts are with it, but some of the leg cross braces are broken at the ends. I'm afraid to repair it before I know what I have. There is white grease pen or chalk writing under the seat. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I love the seat the best ! No expert sorry ! But I've seen enough of this type of stuff and wouldn't surprise me if it was considered to be a one of a kind Folk art. I'd clean it up at least ! And what could it hurt to put it together ? I don't think wood glueing will de pleat it's value but a keeper none the less ! Your the one in control ! And if for no one else ! Hook it up for yourself ! I'd love to see it together. Looks like no refinishing ether ! That's s plus ! If u look at my stuff you'll see my restorations of before and afters. So I do know what that's all about ! Your lucky ! all u have to do is reassemble it a little. And I'd just give it a good conditioning treatment and an industrial strength bees wax. For a high protective sheen coating. !
I hope u get more info! LOVE THAT SEAT !! :..: thanx.
You need to have the front left spindle made and put in. If you have never done this I hope you are a very patient person. Use some masking tape and mark each spindle location before you start taking it apart. I mark them left to right because I am right handed. If you have the new spindle made have them give you scraps of the wood it is turned from. Test your finish on the scraps first until you get the desired match. Very nice piece.
Thanks for the tip. I actually have all the pieces to complete the chair
It's just the very ends of the spindles are broken. I think they could be
'Mini doweled' back together. Anyone try that ?
Lambda55, bee's wax is out these days. Carnauba is in & does an excellent job. Try it. You will like it.
Wax is non chemical and I like it best !
Lambda, carnauba wax.
Awesome chair! I've seen similar chairs called "photographer's" chairs. From one of the many US furniture factories in the 1800's.
JR - I have "mini doweled" before. Works great but I might choose a smaller diameter dowel than the original male size and then plug the hole in the top rail with new hardwood. Then drill that out to match the new dowel size. Good luck. Don't refinish - just touch it up. It looks great.
