I'll ask the same question whenever a roll-top shows up. Are the slats mortised or stapled to canvas?
Think its on canvas
Ones that are mortised are the rare early ones. I didn't seem to take long for the furniture makers to figure out that simple & cheaper way. Also eliminates the problem of slats warping & giving trouble. To be honest, I've only seem 1 made with mortised slats & was impressed. That was true quality! Every time I see a roll-top, I just have to ask!
Did you see any maker label on this roll top.
I love it, because it's the small size roll top, much rare, then the 8 drawers + one in the middle, also the left side have a full panel instaid of 2 legs, more commun one in ssmall version.
Also the fact that this still have is original varnish, make it more valuable, the key entry, make me believe this was a good maker.
On the low end roll top just have round basic brass ring for the key opening.
I wish you find on the back a label from,Cutler Desk Company located in Buffalo, New York.
This company was the first patent Roll top in 1850, they produce High QualityRoll Top.
