Rare Maggie Howe Enamel Owl

It is said that Maggie Howe introduced the use of enamel as a stand-a-lone craft to Mexico. Little is known about her background, but from the 1950’s into the 1970’s she created an amazing array of utilitarian and artistic pieces that showcased her brilliance with the medium. She was an original exhibitor at the Bazaar Sabado where she displayed and sold pieces weekly. She was also represented in the Mexico City Los Castillo shops.

When Maggie Howe chose to depict an owl it was usually a horned variety, with a pear-shaped body, and oval eyes. The overall style is painterly, built with layers of enamel over enamel. The owl looks wise and friendly and the ethereal abstract background completes the composition.
