I do not know anything about this knife it was found in my yard has LA Salle engraved on it. It is sterling silver and sounds like something in the handle.

These hollow handled knives have the blades attached with a material that with enough age or by seeing the inside of a dishwasher or even if the water in the sink is too hot it can dry out and that may be what is causing the ''rattle'' for lack of a better word. Since it was in the garden, perhaps this was someone's garden knife? It has been redesigned, I use that word when my dogs get at a pair of shoes or a gloves here. Some one has butchered the blade perhaps to use it as a tool to divide perennials? It was once a member of someone's dinner service. You can try and id the pattern. Try http://silverpattern.com They have great images and a pretty comprehensive list of patterns in both silver and silverplated patterns.
