The Union Pacific Steam Locomotive No. 844 was the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific and was delivered in 1944. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled such renowned trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger Trains. The engine has been hailed as Union Pacific's "Living Legend."
No. 844 represents the pinnacle of "modern" steam power. It can and has exceeded 100 miles per hour, and regularly cruised at 80 to 90 miles per hour in normal passenger service.
I had a chance to visit the 844 a few years ago and here are a few photos.
Thanks for looking,
Dave

Beautiful locomotive. Looks like it used a centipede tender similar to a Big Boy's.

Now I'm sorry I sold my American Flyer train sets. Had one of the metal locomotives and the Union Pacific freight set. Grandfather retired from the Santa Fe Railroad and his sister was a "Harvey Girl". Yes, it's true, just history. Also like the Model a Ford P-U have one that's half restored. It's a Sept. of 1930. Yes, I have had & have had too much stuff.
I love trains!! My mom and I traveled by trains in the late 1940s in the midwest and spent the nights in a "sleeper" The most fun The sound of the tracks put me to sleep easily. Great memories, just unforgettable. I hate to fly!!
I've been away for awhile & need to catch up on appreciations, so thanks to:

I've been very lucky in that #844 has visited the UP Jenks Engine Shops in North Little Rock, AR 3 times in the past 5 yrs or so. In each case I've gone to watch it arrive and/or depart, the 2nd time I actually got to ride behind it in a 1950's vintage 'excursion train' from Bald Knob AR (I think) back to NLR (the "UP Great Excursion Adventure", AR beat out several other potential routes in total 'online votes' to win the opportunity for that visit) and the last time got the chance for a slight diversion from a work 'service call trip' to park trackside in downtown Morrilton, AR and watch (+get phone video) it thunder thru their downtown (only 30MPH or so?) without stopping. AWESOME SIGHT/SOUND, that... ;-) :-) :-)
AnythingObscure, sounds like some great times. These steam engines are awesome to see in motion.
