Took a ride on a 2-6-2 Prairie Class locomotive last year. It was built by Baldwin in 1922, probably weighs about 75-85 tones.
In the second photo you can see the fireman, it's a lot more work than the fireman on diesel has to do. Even if it is oil burning locomotive. The engineer is on the right side.
I was sitting on the tender with my feet on the locomotive for most of the trip then I was hanging onto the railing seen in the last photo.
The main rules are don't burn yourself and don't fall off.

I live close to Baldwins Locomotive Company in Eddystone Pa. The renovated office still stands, where the factory stood is a Wal Mart.
