- Featured on the cover is the Northrop P-61 'Black Widow' - the first operational U.S. military aircraft designed specifically for night interception of opposing aircraft, and was the first aircraft specifically designed to use radar. The P-61 had a crew of three: pilot, gunner, and radar operator. They were introduced into service in 1944 and retired in 1954. The third photo shows then-current other operational U.S. military aircraft (note the caption beneath the top aircraft, the Boeing B-29) - Last photo shown is a recruitment advertisement for the Army Air Forces, still a joint service until the Air Force was formed in 1947.
