Ford Motor Company's decision to produce a new V-8 engine for introduction in the 1968 model year was influenced by the results of advanced design work began in 1964. The new engine design was conceived and developed to attain the prerequisites of luxury car applications, coupled with a primary objective of minimum unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emissions. This primary objective led to an engine design oriented around the induction, combustion and exhaust processes.
This is an interesting look at the reasoning behind the adjustments being made, although I find it funny because my dad, Albert Federick (often misspelled Frederick...) Martin used to come home from work and would often say " I don't understand why they want it to go so fast, the speed limit is only 55" ... referring to his design requirements for the Colby Jet.
I love to talk to the guys at car shows with Shelby's and tell them this story, I often get a "thanks to your dad" ...
Dad died when I was 17 of a heart attack after leaving his office at the "glass house", and this is one of my favorite things.
