Art Deco Eva Zeisel Bowl

This Art Deco, glazed ceramic flower or console bowl was manufactured by the Schramberger Majolikafabrik in Germany, circa 1930. The pattern is called "Gobelin 8," which was designed by famed modernistic designer Eva Zeisel. In German, "Gobelin" means tapestry. It measures approximately approximately 6 1/4 inches wide and 2 1/2 inches tall, and it has a matching glazed interior. The impressed number on the bottom of the bowl is 2760, which is not an identified Zeisel-designed shape during her work at the Schramberg factory. However, when I contacted the Brohan Museum for more information on this bowl, the curator there definitely attributed the glaze to her , stating "We know that Eva Zeisel´s patterns were often used to decorate shapes that were designed earlier (before 1928), and I think your bowl is an example of this practice. The glazed interior is interesting indeed, I never saw this before."

I think the glazed interior really sets off the rest of the design of the bowl, and I'm glad it's unique.

Eva Zeisel was a prolific designer throughout the 20th century. She died at the age of 105 a few years ago, and the New York Times did an obituary on her here:
